DENTISTRY & ORAL SURGERYA veterinary dentist is a licensed veterinarian that has completed advanced training and certification in the diagnosis and treatment of complex dentistry and oral surgery cases; WestVet’s Dr. Kristin Walker will partner with your family veterinarian to provide the best care for your pet.
Dental care of dogs and cats is crucial to their quality of life. In fact, periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed health problem in companion animals. More importantly, chronic infection and inflammation in the mouth may contribute to other serious health problems elsewhere in the body.
Just as with humans, dental health is vital for a pet’s general health and comfort. Most routine procedures such as dental examinations, cleanings, and extractions can be completed by your family veterinarian. However, there are times when a veterinarian may refer a patient for advanced dental procedures under the care of a board-certified veterinary dental specialist.
WestVet is pleased to offer the expertise and services of two board certified specialists, Dr. Katherine Block and Dr. Kristin Walker, both Diplomates of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC).
Specialists in veterinary dentistry can offer many advanced treatments including:
Periodontology. Treatment of all stages of periodontal disease: dental prophylaxis (routine tooth scaling and polishing), root planing/curettage, advanced periodontal surgery (e.g., guided tissue and bone regeneration).
Orthodontics. The correction of painful dental/skeletal malocclusions: orthodontic appliances and orthognathic surgery.
Prosthodontics. Cast metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all-ceramic crowns, tooth-colored (composite) fillings.
Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. Our services include digital intraoral radiography, conventional skull/TMJ imaging and advanced imaging modalities (CT and MRI).
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Surgical tooth extractions, cleft palate defects, traumatic palate defects, oronasal fistulas, oral tumor resection, jaw fracture repair/reconstruction and TMJ disorders. Veterinary dentists are experts in treating facial trauma and their knowledge of how jaws come together (occlusion) is critical when repairing complex jaw fractures
Oral Medicine. The oral health care of medically-complex patients and the diagnosis and non-surgical management of medically-related disorders and oral conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region (e.g., stomatitis, oral autoimmune diseases, orofacial pain, and infections).
